Action Ideas

I recently read an article about a "Corn for the Horn" fundraiser for drought-striken countries in East Africa. Selling popcorn is fairly simple. There are many events where people buy popcorn. How could students combine selling popcorn with an awareness event. Any ideas?

Skip-A-Snack Day: Invite the entire school (parents, too) to skip a recess snack and make a donation to the famine. Use the opportunity to hold a school assembly to raise awareness of the crisis. Teacher Garry Howe started this event at Glen Dhu Public School a few years ago; reply to this post and address your questions to Garry if you'd like more info about Skip-A-Snack Day.

Speak Out: Stay informed about what's happening in the Horn of Africa. Post a class blog to inform and invite other schools to get involved. Share the blog link with friends, family and school staff.

“Bags of Hope” Action Project

This year the Glen Dhu World Vision club will once again be organizing and running the “Bags of Hope” action project to raise funds for famine relief effort in the horn of Africa. In 2011, however we will be doing things a little differently.

As before, we will be asking the families in our school community to donate small inexpensive-type items such as pens, small toys, candy, etc. sealed in a ziplock bag. We then have a designated day or two where these bags are displayed on a table in the hallway or library. Students are called down by classes at which time they can purchase the bags.

This is now where our new format takes over. In the past students have purchased bags for themselves for a loonie and all the proceeds are given to the designated cause. This year we are asking students to purchase two bags at a time for a toonie. They will get to keep one bag while the other one will be sent to a child in need in our local community. This can be done through various organizations such as the Salvation Army or local church groups.

The premise behind doing the project this way is to demonstrate the importance of recognizing and meeting poverty needs both internationally and locally. We anticipate that it will be very rewarding for students to be giving a gift bag to some other child who is less fortunate. This will be a very tangible way of demonstrating love and sacrifice as we approach Christmas time.

We are thinking of using the theme “Be a BOSO (Buy One Send One).”...we’re still pondering this one?

We would appreciate any ideas or input from other schools, particularly as we venture into this new approach. For example, what types of incentives (if any) would be effective in getting students/families to donate items or buy the bags? If any other school is interested in doing such an action project (or something similar), lets connect and share ideas through this amazing website.
