Skip - A – Snack Day
Last year at Glen Dhu School the “World Vision Club” organized our first annual “Skip-A-Snack Day[/b]”. The purpose of this particular project is to increase awareness about world hunger within the school community, and also to raise funds to support this cause. We engaged in a number of educational activities with the students which then culminated in a day in which the students gave up their snack for the morning recess period.
This year we are inviting other schools to join us in this effort aimed at encouraging students to feel some empathy for those who go hungry, as well as make a positive difference in the world by raising money for those less fortunate.
Details of this project are outlined below:
• Click on to the “World Class” website and register your school/class. This site will allow you to receive, free, a wide variety of global education activities – many related to hunger (located on the Resources page of the website or in the folder World Hunger in the virtual Staff Room). It will also give you and your students the opportunity to see what other schools are involved in and share what you are doing at your school through online discussions and blogs. Here’s the link to the site:

• You will then need to follow the three simple steps below, which are the foundation of the World Class program.
1. Think
Engage your students in one or more of the educational activities related to world hunger. The GEAR – Global Education Activity Resource contains lessons to get students thinking about rights and responsibilities. GEAR can be downloaded for free from the Resources page of the website. Once a member of World Class, you’ll also get a free hard copy of GEAR along with a DVD. You could also have students create posters and other projects to increase awareness of world hunger in the school community.
2. Act
Have the students participate in the “Skip – A – Snack” day by skipping their morning snack, and bringing in a donation which will go to World Vision. The skip-a-snack date will be held in mid-April. Our aim is to have all schools try and arrange their date within the same week. The exact week will be announced shortly. All donations this year will be given to a location in Haiti. Check the World Class site for field stories from Haiti and an update on Haiti’s progress a year after the devastating earthquake.
3. Change
Have your students complete a “reflection” exercise of some kind to share how the learning activities and action (skipping a snack to fight hunger) has changed their views and behaviours. Have students post their reflections in a blog on World Class, or compile student responses and create one class blog to post on the site.
For program or technical support in using the World Class site, contact Hoa Truong-White (hoa_truong-white@worldvision.ca).
What will you receive?
1. All schools that complete each of the steps above will become certified as a “World Class School” by World Vision Canada and will receive a World Vision certificate of achievement.
2. Each participating student will receive a wrist bracelet with the words “Hunger Hurts” on one side and, “I made a Difference” on the other
Other specific details of the program such as collection of the donations, distribution of materials, etc. will be forthcoming.
