Skip-A-Snack Program Stretching through Students
The Glen Dhu World Vision Club are trying out a new strategy this year to promote participation in the Skip-A-Snack program in other schools throughout the Durham region.
It is often said that the best advertisement is through “word of mouth”. This year we are going to encourage students to invite their friends, cousins, team mates, etc. to join them in participating in the program. Here’s how we plan to make this work:
* Our Skip-A-Snack Day is scheduled for Thursday April 12 (participating students will give up their snack on that morning)
* We will be having a kick-off assembly on Thursday April 5th.
* Students will be asked to bring in a toonie during the week prior to April 12th and they will be given a wrist band which says “Skip-A-Snack, Save A Life.” In addition, each student will be given extra wrist bands for every person that they get to participate in the program from outside Glen Dhu. (they will then hand these out to those students)
* There will be prizes for students in each division who bring in the most participants from outside our school. We will also have prizes for classrooms which have the greatest percentage participation rate in their rooms.
* During the time that the students would normally be eating their snacks we will be providing a written/visual art activity related to the cause (e.g. create a greeting card explaining why you decided to participate in Skip-A-Snack – This will be especially important for students who are participating outside our school so that they have an alternate activity while others around them are snacking). The students will have the opportunity after to put up their cards around the school to promote awareness.
* We feel the wrist bands are an important addition to the program this year. An informal survey in our school revealed to us that the students are more inspired to participate because of the bands, and it will also help spread the message around the community as the students wear them through the year.
We have ordered a 1000 of the wrist bands at a cost of just $375.00. This is very cost-effective, especially when you consider that we will be handing them out for a toonie each.
On Skip-A-Snack day we will be following up the mini “famine” with a celebratory assembly where we will show some short WV videos from the website, present an inspiring music powerpoint, and also acknowledge those students/classes who won the competitions for participation.
I Hope you will consider some of the ideas we have presented here, and I would also appreciate any thoughts and/or feedback you have as to how this program could be done differently, or made more effective.
All the best with your Hunger project this year!!
