Bad Luck Names

When our first child was born, we considered naming her after one of my husband's relatives. We had also toyed around with names that belonged to my side of the family. My Vietnamese parents informed me that in our culture, it's bad luck to name your child after a family member. What? How could I have lived all those years without knowing that? In my husband's family, it's an honour to be named after a family member. So, we compromised. Our children would have first names that were unique, but their middle names could be in honour of a relative. We also kept the Vietnamese tradition of giving all our girls the same middle name. If we had had more than one boy, they would all have the same middle name as well.

It seems silly to follow these naming customs that have no rhyme nor reason; but they keep us connected to our roots and strengthen our sense of belonging.

Post a blog and share a naming custom in your family or culture.
